Lower Sava HPPs operated from Control Centre

In normal hydrological conditions, HPP Boštanj, HPP Arto-Blanca and HPP Krško are remotely operated from GEN Control Centre (GEN CC), and HPP Brežice is operated locally by an on-duty HESS operator. This method of operation ensures that operating instructions are adhered to in all possible scenarios, terms and conditions of the concession agreement are fulfilled, water rights of other users of the water from the Sava are respected, particularly Krško Nuclear Power Plant (NEK), and that an operating schedule is maintained which allows the changing of the Sava flow rates downstream from the most recently built hydroelectric power plant, HPP Brežice.

HPP Brežice has an operator on duty 24/7 who is responsible for supervising the operation of the HPPs on the lower course of the Sava and monitoring the current hydrological conditions. If needed, the operator can monitor and control HPP Boštanj, HPP Arto-Blanca and HPP Krško via remote web workplace (RWW) and video surveillance system. He is responsible for handling communication with the operating personnel at HPP Vrhovo, GEN CC, Regional Emergency Response Centre, operating personnel at NEK and HPP Boštanj, HPP Arto-Blanca and HPP Krško, as well as other stakeholders (fire brigade, fishermen, and others).

In normal circumstances, HPP Boštanj, HPP Arto-Blanca and HPP Krško operate unmanned, without on-site personnel. An on-duty HPP operator is present on site at individual hydroelectric power plants during ongoing periodic maintenance activities, during operations carried out by external contractors, during operating emergencies and in other circumstances which require the hydroelectric power plant to be operated locally.
