Multipurpose projects on the Sava River – more than just electricity generation…

The Sava, our country's longest river, has long played a crucial role for the people living with it. Through history, the river had a generally positive impact on the lives of the people along its banks, but its torrential character would also cause a great deal of hardship and problems to these people. The fast-flowing river burst its banks several times, destroying property, crops and other infrastructural facilities. In the past the Sava in the Posavje region was quite inaccessible and unattractive in terms of affording pleasant spots for walking or relaxing, the riverside areas were covered by thick growth, trees were more often than not "decorated" with plastic bags and other waste washed downstream and deposited by the swelling water.

Today the river has a completely different look and feel. The Sava River offers a wealth of possibilities for the development of economic, tourism and sporting activities and for fostering regional ties, which in turn helps improve the quality of living for the people along its banks and farther out. By completing multipurpose projects, the company HESS makes a significant contribution to the sustainable harnessing of the Sava's hydro potential and to the development of resultant positive impacts for the local population (infrastructure, flood protection, watercourse management, farmland irrigation, sport and tourism development, nature conservancy configurations, etc.). Along with the construction of the hydroelectric power plants on the lower course of the river, cycleways and leisure routes were built along the reservoirs. This opened up a wide range of possibilities for cycling, running, walking, and outdoor pleasures, where anyone can find their own quiet spot to relax and get away from the exhausting and stressful daily routine.

Every day, at weekends in particular, the embankments and walking paths along the Sava are full of people taking a walk, having a run or leisurely bicycle ride, or engaging in some other activity. Walking by the Sava has become one of the most attractive and popular ways of spending spare time for the people living in the populated areas along the river. There are numerous recreational areas along the section of the Sava from HPP Boštanj to HPP Brežice, and a walk along the embankment is an ideal way of spending a Sunday with one's family. When tired or simply wanting to take a breather, one can stop for a rest on the benches or juts found along the river and watch birds, fish, ducks, families of swans…

Sports enthusiasts were quick to recognize the reservoirs of the hydroelectric power plants as superb areas for water sports – from boating and paddling to standup paddleboarding, and when wind conditions are good, there are also windsurfers and kiteboarders.

Reflections in the water, diverse scenery, and numerous fields and orchards along the reservoirs are particularly spectacular in the mornings and evenings, when one can enjoy magnificent views of the sunrise or sunset and capture the most beautiful highlight on camera…
