The influence of the HPP on the Sava and Krka river in view of the latest floods
The construction of HPP has significantly increased the flood protection level from Radeče to Krško. Considerable problems still arise, however, at the confluence of the Sava and Krka rivers, as the higher discharge of the former prevents the Krka to flow into the Sava. Much of our attention was focused on finding solutions that would limit extensive floods in the Krška vas and Velike Malence areas. Even the temporary depot between the Sava and Krka rivers, put in place during the construction of HPP Brežice, influenced the water levels in Krška vas and Velike Malence during the recent floods. It prevented catastrophic situations such as those several years ago, even if the discharge was practically the same. Due to the temporary flood protection, the water level in Krška vas and Velike Malence remained at least a meter lower than in the case the depot had not been there.
We remain convinced that the deepening of the Sava river bed on the section from HPP Brežice to Terme Čatež will conclusively avert the threat of floods from Krška vas and Velike Malence.
